  • Condition: Several cracks or splits in liner: 2 inches transversely on right side, 3/4 inch on top to rear of center, 3/4 inch on left rear quarter at edge, and at rear edge just left of center less than 1/4 inch. None of these impedes its function as a helmet liner. There is a 1 inch vertical tear in the webbing on right, a 3/8 x 1/4 x 1/4 inch "bite" from the rear suspension webbing, and a 1/2 inch transverse split in right frontal webbing. Original sweatband was removed to facilitate inspection & photo of damage to webbing but is included in sale. See item description for details on frontal M.P. marking. No chinstrap.

    Description

    The M.P. letters on front appear to have been made from tape 1/2 inch wide, but I cannot feel any raised lettering. The outline of the lettering is visible upon close inspection; apparently the taped pieces were removed, and there is no "sticky" adhesive residue. The lettering is 1 15/16 to 2 inches high and includes a rectangular shape period (wider than high) after each letter. One unusual aspect of the lettering is that the two "vertical" strokes of the "M" are not parallel; the stroke farther from the center grommet is oblique or angled rather than vertical. This can be seen on close inspection of the photos. The Westinghouse logo in the interior crown is quite clear in the helmet, but less clearly shown in photo than "D 29" which is impressed below it. A string of alpha-numeric characters is printed on the webbed end of the sweatband, but it is mostly illegible. A-washers securing the web harness to liner interior and buckle & clips on sweatband bear original olive green paint, correct for WW2 production. No chinstrap.
