Artist statement:
“NEW WORK and last poster(s) of 2022. This one is for Goose The Band and was a real whirlwind of a project, but I'm glad it all worked out and that they're in the fans hands.
Thank you to Morgan Miller for the offer and the crew at Valhalla for making it happen. The band needed a diptych for their NYE party, and time was of the essence, so we decided to build off of the poster that I did for them earlier in the year that everyone seemed to dig (slide 4). If you look in the background of that illustration, you can see a wonky little rocketship cruising towards the moon, so the concept then became, "what if that was the band going to party on the moon for NYE?" and it went from there. I'd already worked on some concept astronaut art for some merch and just combined that with an old sketch I'd had from 2017 of an anthropomorphic moon with horns / aliens / balloons and other weird stuff pouring out of it.
Part of the concept was also the idea of things morphing from black and white to full color, so we mixed in a few elements of A Trip to the Moon and The Wizard of Oz as well. Since this diptych was a direct tie-in to the Pittsburgh poster, we kept the old underground comix format going and also slipped in the little propeller character from that poster (as if he'd just been drifting farther up into space this whole time). It was crazy fast, but I'm pretty stoked on how it came together and hope the fans are too. I'll have APs available sometime next week, including foil variants and exclusive uncut sheets that aren't available anywhere else (paper and foil versions).
